WHAT MAKES A GAME REPLAYABLE
replayability is almost an art. “Game design companies must tread a fine line between making a game too replayable and not enough replayability.” Gamers won’t buy new video games if they aren’t satisfied with the current game. They want something that will provide hours of enjoyment while also encouraging them to purchase later games by the same developer. This is a tricky situation, but there are solutions.
Replaying, old or new, is a lot of fun. However, some games offer more entertainment than others. Although this list only covers 9 strategies, there are many others. Multiple tactics can be used simultaneously. This will focus on single players since multiplayer can keep you coming back for more social aspects and unlocking new gear.
PROCEDURAL GENERATION CONTENT
This is a semi-randomization of levels. This is very common in roguelikes such as the Diablo series. While the dungeon levels may change from one game to another, they will still meet specific criteria. Since Dungeons and Dragons, it has been a standard of replayability.
It can be tedious to play the same game repeatedly, so gamers must navigate new environments and situations to keep them interested and engaged. This can be combined with other mechanics such as multiple classes to give you many playthroughs, each feeling unique. You don’t have to limit yourself to levels. Borderlands has procedurally created weapons, resulting in billions of different guns available.
The reliable procedural generation of content is an effective way to keep a game from becoming too slow, too boring, or unrepeatable. It won’t take long for the game to become a little too monotonous. Even though the game is technically new, you will start to see the same elements popping up again and again. You never know what else might be there. Technology will continue to improve, and games will be more varied. It’s exciting to see where the future takes us.
DIFFERENT CLASSES & FACTIONS
The game can feel fresh if there are classes that offer completely different gameplay experiences. Dark Souls stands above the rest, with different magic, ranged, and melee classes. Even different melee classes feel distinctive. A Strength build will make you slow and vulnerable to attack but deal massive damage. Heavy armor is used to tank hits and compensate for the slow animation. Although dexterity builds can be agile and quick due to lighter armor and weapons, it requires faster reflexes to dodge attacks and dart in. You can customize and max-max as much as you like.
There are many more examples. My favorite implementation is in RTS games like Total War. The Total War series is a long-running game that has seen hundreds of hours spent cycling through various factions. You can choose to be an armoured Juggernaut or a fast horse archer army. You can play with different types of units, which will drastically change your strategy and alliances.
